Problem solving was never so delightful, as when I put my bet on a time-tested solutioning tool/process – when in trouble, connect with your roots, the fundamental elements, or solutions of a core nature, that provide the much needed structure to business processes.
A case in point are how the Swahili people, one of the early tribes of east Africa, overcame rising concerns of strife and war, by resorting to their unifying cultural elements, their roots. With the advent of modernism in Africa, the Swahilis, like many other indigenous people, faced a crisis of identity whenthe Swahili people living on the coastal regions and islands formed a more liberal and urban outlook, than their African mainland counterparts. Consequently, they were viewed with suspicion and disdain by the Swahili people of the African mainland, leading to a rift amongst this once prosperous tribe. However, before this rift could take a violent turn – as has happened on so many occasions in Africa – sane voices from within the tribal bodies took certain measures to ensure peaceful co-habitation. One such measure was to highlight their common ethnicity – their shared historical, cultural and linguistic roots. Thus, Mizizi, meaning roots in Swahili language, became a buzzword, a word associated with Swahili pride, and an important aspect of Swahili lore.
When entrepreneurship offered me wide-ranging opportunities of problem solving, the approach of the Swahili people of returning to their ‘Mizizi’ became my guiding principle.
Mizizi Management System thus reinforces the spirit and strength of simple solutions to complex problems:
